East High School was founded in 1861. Our motto, “For the Service of Humanity,” embraces the school’s focus on developing lifelong learners who will be productive citizens. The East High School Alumni Association was the idea of May Goodrell, who graduated from East in 1877 and was also its principal from 1901 to 1918. The Des Moines East High School Alumni Association is one of the oldest and largest high school alumni associations in the country. The East High School Alumni Foundation was started in 1986 and each year awards $200,000 or more in scholarships to deserving EHS students. These are all things to be very proud of and support!

Separating the Foundation and Association
Over the last several years, initiatives of the Alumni Association and Foundation have grown together, with one board serving all needs. In late 2020, the EHS Alumni Foundation Board voted to re-formalize separation of the two groups, with updated articles of incorporation and bylaws for each. Currently, new boards will lead focused efforts with staggered terms. All board members are listed on the Board Members page.
Purpose of each group:
- The East High School Alumni Foundation raises funds for student scholarships, and facilities and programs for East High School.
- The East High School Alumni Association facilitates the lifetime connection of alumni, students, and friends with East High School, our East Des Moines community and one another, toward the betterment of all.
