New to the Scarlet Celebration this year, the 2025 EHS Athletic Hall of Fame Awards will be presented to three coaches who have made their dedication to their sports as a commitment to their athletes’ successes. Allen Ashby, who passed away in 1985, was a 1925 EHS graduated who excelled in football, basketball, wrestling and tennis. He is being inducted into the EHS Athletic Hall of Fame for his tennis accomplishments in high school and his organization of the Hilltop Tennis Tournament, which was primarily for Black players. We will show a video of his daughter and granddaughter as they share some of Allen’s life stories and achievements.
Tom Hand, who passed away in 2002, will be remembered by his daughter in a video as she shares Tom’s life as EHS wrestling coach from 1956-1972. Tom is a member of the Iowa High School Athletic Association Wrestling Hall of Fame and is considered a pioneer of the sport in Iowa.
Brian Luft, who currently teaches physical education at East, coached East baseball teams from 1998-2022. He achieved 553 wins with East Baseball and 638 total victories in his career. He logged his 600th win in 2019 against Clarke High School, as only one of 50 coaches at that time to have that record. Brian will share his stories of his coaching career in a video at the Celebration.
